Manual or automatic budgeting? Choose your starting point

How to choose a money-management approach that suits the way you actually live.

The best budgeting system is not the one with the most automation. It is the one you are willing to maintain, understand and trust.

Why manual tracking works

Manual entry makes every change deliberate. It can be enough if you have only a few accounts, enjoy reviewing transactions and prefer not to connect a bank. It also works when your institution is unsupported.

Where automatic tracking helps

Read-only connections can reduce the routine task of importing activity, especially across several accounts. But automatic import still needs categorization checks, transfer pairing, data freshness awareness and a safe way to correct mistakes locally.

Beware the 'set and forget' promise

A bank connection can disconnect, a transaction can appear late and a refund can create an unusual pattern. Automation should simplify review, not eliminate it entirely.

A sensible starting point

Begin with one account and one useful monthly view. If manual tracking becomes tedious, consider whether supported automatic tracking would meaningfully save time. If it does, choose a tier that provides it and keep a light review habit.

Saldio is designed so manual control remains a legitimate choice, while read-only connections and advanced app-side automation become available on eligible plans. There is no single correct pace for everyone.
